The thickness of the weaving board tapers from 2 mm in the middle down to 1 mm at the edge. This means that the individual weaving boards only rest in the middle and slide very nicely over each other, which simplifies handling.

Weaving boards made of bone were already commonly used by the Germanic tribes for board weaving, and were also used by the Vikings until the Middle Ages. There are several finds of historical weaving boards made of bone from the Middle Ages. Board weaving (also called tablet weaving) involves using a quantity of these boards (e.g., 8) to weave a narrow band. By twisting the boards together in a certain way, an almost infinite number of different patterns is possible.
