Towards the sides, the thickness of these medieval weaving tablets decreases from 2 mm in the middle to 1 mm at the sides. This means that the individual weaving tablets only rest in the middle and slide nicely over each other, which simplifies handling and also reduces the weight.

Weaving tablets with three, four, or five holes were already commonly used by the Germanic tribes for board weaving and were also used by the Vikings until the Middle Ages. There are several finds of historical weaving tablets from the Middle Ages.

Board weaving involves using a larger or smaller number of warp threads and tablets to weave a narrow or wider band, hence the name board weaving. By twisting the weaving tablets together in a certain way, an almost infinite number of different patterns are possible.
