The European Buff coat (so-called because of its yellowish color) was an item of leather clothing worn by both the infantry and cavalry during the 17th century, usually worn under armour. It was derived from the simple leather jerkins worn by soldiers during the Tudor period eventually becoming a 3/4 length, close-fitting garment with long sleeves and a high collar to protect the neck and arms.

Typically, a buff coat was crafted from 3mm-thick suede cowhide and provided protection against swords, blunt trauma and possibly long range pistol balls, however as with all armour of the time it was ineffective against musket fire. As well as protecting the wearer from bad weather the buff coat became a highly desirable status symbol in the mid 17th century, making it the ancestor of the modern leather jacket.

See additional pictures for more details.

Our buff coat does not have buttons, it uses a leather thong fed through two holes. It is designed to be trimmed to length by you. The image shows the cord tucked in but would look better when trimmed. It also features open armpits to allow greater flexibility and breathability for active practitioners of Re-enactment, SCA or LARP.

Amazing quality item! The ex-display item that I bought is, apparently, shop-soiled. All I can say it that the new item must be truly excellent.
The weight and quality of the leather is very good, the stitching is excellent and the XL fits me well at 191cm 105kgs.

MFC really needs to change the photos for the item. The reality is a much sturdier and substantial item that looks correct and will provide very good protection.

Top stuff.

As authentic as it gets Bought 1 year ago as my main piece for my LARP kit. The large fits me perfectly and looks amazing on the field. Extremely stiff at first and requires some softening and wearing out for a few months. After that it is a dream to wear and fight in. Takes blows as light armor should and has protected me well.

I'm back today to buy the lobster pot and cuirass.

Excellent Buff Coat The pictures do not do this coat justice (seriously!). The Medium was a perfect fit my 5'6, 145 lb self with room to spare to move around! Even from Australia to Western Canada, the coat arrived in mint condition (the box was a bit mangled, but no damage to the contents!) The stitching is solid and there is no better test to a products integrity...then by subjecting it to air freight crews! Will definitely be looking into acquiring a lobster pot and cuirass in the near future!

Big guys arming coat Very, very solid and heavy. This is armour on it's own, let alone under something. I'm a big guy and the measurements fitted well except for the lower arms. I let these out by cutting the seam as they are under my bracers.

Great stuff Well made, strong and comfortable, looks great and for those with heaps of plate armour you will like that this jacket is not to thick. With plate and maille this jacket gives plenty of movement. Does take two days to dry after a wash tho but its a great product.

Honest to goodness buff coat! Was really bowled over when I googled buff coat and got a hit to come here. This is a great bit of history. It's decently made and the Large sized coat is just ample enough to be worn by a moderately sized, tall person. The 42 inch chest max tests the limit of the coat. I got into it and moved about, with arms, and didn't bind the coat. Also works with the armor kit sold here, but don't try dressing yourself alone ( lol ).

Everything reasonably priced, and overseas service proved to be blindingly fast.
