Saxon Lyre

This is a fully functional quality instrument made in Australia.

A lyre is a type of stringed instrument known since ancient times and played by the Germanic and Celtic tribes throughout the Viking and Medieval periods. They were known as a Harpa in Old Norse and a Hearpa in Old English, which was also the same words used to describe the common triangular shaped harp that we know today.

A music sample prepared by Australian harpist Torin King is available here.

In modern terms, the difference between a harp and a lyre is that the strings on a lyre run over a bridge parallel to the soundboard, while the strings on a harp pull through the soundboard and run perpendicular to it.

This Lyre is based on the one found at Sutton Hoo in England from the 7th Century and others. It has been entirely hand crafted in Australia from Oak with a hollow sound box and authentic rustic look and feel. Each instrument is totally unique. It measures approximately 76cms long x 18cms wide x 3cms deep and is strung with 6 high quality harp strings in the key of C major (Hucbalds tuning – no sharps or flats, which makes it easy to tune and play). The lyre comes complete with a tuning key and string chart.
