Arming Jackets, or gambesons, were the staple armour of the medieval period. Before steelworks and metallurgy became commonplace, combatants relied on padding to stop lethal blows. And even after that, soldiers still needed padding underneath their metal armour for comfort and further protection. Gambesons have always been a crucial element of historical armours.

This arming jacket in particular is a later-period design. It features a multitude of ties and holes, called purpoints, that are intended to allow for the attachment of external armour pieces. They are on the shoulders for spaulders, elbows for cops and the waist for tassets and leg armours. The ties are cotton braid and have brass aglets.

The jacket itself is 100% cotton. It is three layered on the outside, and filled with cotton padding. It is light and comfortable, perfect as the under armour upon which to mount your steel pieces.

Sleeves (armpit to cuff): 51 cm
Shoulder to hem: 65 cm
Chest Circumference: 120 cm
Thickness: approx. 1cm

Weight: 1.18 kg

Don't be misguided by claims that heavier gambesons are better. Sure, more padding can equal more protection but more weight doesn't equal more padding. It can simply mean it is larger or longer or more cumbersome. An ideal combat gambeson is a balance between softening a blow and your movement. A gambeson that is overweight can impede your skill and prowess on the battlefield. When in doubt trust only MFC products or contact us for the full story. Our gambesons are not only better designed for re-enactors they are also far better value.
