The use of mail was prominent throughout the High Middle Ages - it reached its apex in the 13th century , when full body suits of mail armour were developed.
Historically it is known as 'mail' or 'maille' but never 'chain mail' the latter is a modern misnoma.
Coifs were made to cover the head (face excluded), neck and shoulders.
