This two piece steel collar is designed to protect the throat. It is intended to protect against swords and other non-projectile weapons. It buckles on both the left and the right at the neck and is also secured by a keyhole latch on either side.
Leather straps are included for attaching to a breastplate or arming jacket.
This piece features two brass HIPPOKAMPOI (Hippocamps) - fish-tailed horses of the sea. They are depicted as a composite creature with the head and fore-parts of a horse and the serpentine-tail of a fish. The hippocamps are positioned either side of a gorgon. Gorgons were a popular image in Greek mythology. Their legendary gaze could turn humans to stone and therefore images of gorgons were often put upon objects for protection.
