Similar in shape to the Persian gerrhon and Boeotian shields.

Made of polished dark-drown leather with a shape similar to a violin, hence the modern name for this shield design. It has an embossed 8 pointed cross and 8 smaller brass bosses with a larger brass boss in the centre.
